Maponya Mall Commemorates June 16, 1976

When high school students in Soweto started protesting for a better education on 16 June 1976, violence was the only language that was used by the police and the students. Police responded with teargas and live bullets. It is commemorated today by a South African national holiday, Youth Day, which honours all the young people who lost their lives in the struggle against Apartheid and Bantu Education. Maponya Mall has erected a statue in remembrance of our young heroes of yesterday.

Maponya Mall remembers June 16, 1976. At our main entrance is the statue of the picture which grabbed the world's attention, reminding us of the change brought about by our young heroes of then. In this month of June, Maponya Mall salutes the youth of 1976.
